THECOLORGREY JAMAICA

Ever since hip-hop’s emergence within the New York boroughs in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, it has become an unstoppable movement, finding a way to far flung countries and communities, each one leaving their own imprint on this ever-evolving music style. One place where hip-hop and rap has sprung up with fresh energy in recent years is Belgium. Some names you may already know from the Belgian scene are Blackwave, DVTCH NORRIS, K1D, Woddies Smalls, Darrel Cole, and the focus of our List Pick, THECOLOURGREY. Hailing from Dutch-speaking city of Antwerp, he’s been releasing music since 2016, finding success at home and abroad with a debut album and two EPs. With no signs of slowing down, THECOLORGREY has shared a video for ‘Jamaica’, arguably the strongest hit from his most recent EP, For What It’s Worth. It’s definitely a song to get hyped to, whether pre-gaming with friends, out at a DJ set or watching THECOLOURGREY at one of his impossibly energetic shows. The song is a celebration of his Jamaican heritage and the diaspora who slay connected to their roots while also forming new culture, sounds, fashions and choices for the future. As THECOLORGREY tells it: "For some, Jamaica is all about yellow, green & black. Rasta & dreadlocks. For us however, it’s all about renaissance, the past & the future. A surreal and anachronistic place. And the video is a reflection of that. We recreated the past with our phantasy. The story is a metaphor for ‘taking what’s ours’ and a warning that the ‘Powers that be’ never can rest too comfortably. We’re coming for what’s ours." - Hannah Thacker
